Party wall work in Kent

Dartford, Swanley and Gravesend have plenty of Victorian terraces and interwar semis, with lofts and rear extensions much like South London's. Maidstone mixes Victorian streets with newer estates.

Sevenoaks, Westerham, Tonbridge and Tunbridge Wells have more detached and older houses, where section 6 notices for extensions, and the occasional basement, are the common thread.

Local things that affect party wall work

  • Listed and older buildings. Older houses in Sevenoaks, Westerham and Tunbridge Wells may be listed. Listed building consent is separate from the party wall process, but both need to be in place.
  • Detached does not mean exempt. Excavations within 3 or 6 metres of a neighbour's building still need notice.
  • The councils' role. Kent's borough and district councils handle planning and building control, not party wall matters.

Questions people ask

How far into Kent do you go?

We cover the county, most often the towns closest to South London. Send us the address and we will confirm.

My house is listed. Does that change the party wall process?

The Act applies in the same way, but listed building consent is a separate requirement. Both need to be in place before the work starts.
